Cath-Lit Live Episode 26 with guest Christy Wilkens

I’ve been waiting for a long time to share this book–mostly because I had a front row seat when the events in this book took place!

The grotto at Lourdes is known as a place of healing. But sometimes the miracle that occurs is not physical, but something much deeper. Christy Wilkens made the long trek to Lourdes with her husband, Todd, and their toddler, Oscar—who was plagued by mysterious seizures—through a program with the Order of Malta. In Awakening at Lourdes, Wilkens shares that while Oscar’s condition did improve after their visit, the real healing took place in her heart and her marriage. In Lourdes, her family discovered a deeper love for each other, a renewed sense of community, and an abiding confidence in God’s mercy.

Christy Wilkens is a Catholic wife, mother of six, and the author of Awakening at Lourdes: How an Unanswered Prayer Healed Our Family and Restored Our Faith. She writes for CatholicMom.com, Blessed Is She, and Accepting the Gift. In 2019, she was invested as a Dame in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Cath-Lit Live Episode 23 with guest Sr. Kathleen Glavich

How did a worshipper of Chemosh land on the family tree of Jesus? How did she become the paragon of faithful love to this day? The biblical story of Ruth is a classic. Using imagination and what is known about Ruth’s times, Sister Kathleen expanded this four-page tale in her novel “Book of Ruth, a Tale of Great Loves.” In the book you meet the loyal Ruth, an immigrant; Naomi, her mother-in-law, whose faith is sorely tried; and Boaz, who opens his heart to the foreigner Ruth and Naomi and rescues them from poverty. God’s never-ending love for his people is the dominant theme.

Mary Kathleen Glavich is a Sister of Notre Dame from Chardon, Ohio. She is the author of more than ninety books on spirituality and religious education for children and adults. Formerly she taught every grade from first to twelfth, served as a vocation director for the Diocese of Cleveland, and was a parish minister. She enjoys editing others’ books, giving talks and retreats, playing the piano, and crocheting baby blankets.

Cath-Lit Live Episode 22 with guests C & C Spellman

In C & C Spellman’s new book In the Shadows of Freedom, the United States is finally a meritocracy, where the best and most capable rise to the top. Existing laws and regulations continue to be repealed, and freedom is the mantra of the people. Amanda Burrow, a talented painter, moves to New York City to attend an elite art academy. Once there, she falls for self-assured Ethan Ramsey, a staunch member of the National Citizens Party: the nation’s ruling faction. The NCP seeks to banish anything-or anyone-that might jeopardize an individual’s autonomy. Amanda’s habitually dull and depressed world is turned upside down by her newfound relationship with Ethan. Yet as the NCP heightens its persecution of those who oppose its agenda, will Amanda find true freedom and discover her own identity in a new and increasingly merciless society?

Cassandra and Chris Spellman each dreamed of being published authors, but didn’t know that about each other until after they were married. Cassandra’s favorite activities (besides writing) include clogging and reading books to her children. Chris’s fascination with dystopian political regimes harkens back to his days studying philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. The couple makes their home in upstate New York where they seek to raise the next generation of writers, readers, and thinkers. They blog about philosophy, marriage, faith, and literature at SpellmanBooks.com.

Cath-Lit Live! Episode 21 with guest Barbara Lee

Answering God’s Call: A Scripture-Based Journey for Older Adults (Loyola Press) is an introduction to Biblical figures who are good spiritual role models for older adults. “Older adults” is not defined by age, but includes retirees, “empty nesters,” caregivers, and people who have experienced various kinds of losses. There are familiar figures such as Abram and Elizabeth, as well as less familiar ones, such as Miriam and Lydia. The calls they experience, such as to trust, rejoice, be creative or be hospitable, can inspire people of all ages, but are particularly relevant to those who may be asking, “Who am I now?” “Where is the grace in this?” and “How do I pray about this?”

Barbara Lee is a spiritual director with a ministry to the aging who lives in New York City. She is a retired federal magistrate judge and a long-time member of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, an organization of retired people who do volunteer work among the poor. Cath-Lit Live! Episode 18 with guest Stephanie Landsem

I read this book shortly after it released and loved it! Of course, if you’ve been a follower of mine for a while, you already know how much I love Stephanie Landsem’s historical fiction!

Stephanie Landsem writes historical fiction about women, for women. The Living Water Series is authentic biblical fiction about women transformed by their encounters with Jesus. Her new novel, In a Far-Off Land, is a re-telling of the parable of the prodigal son in 1930s Hollywood and the Great Depression.

The desperation of the Great Depression meets the glamour of Old Hollywood. In A Far-Off Land is a story about the price of fame, the truth sacrificed on its altar, and the love that brings a prodigal daughter home.

It’s a brilliant mix of history, family drama, mystery, and romance!
